no conferences for me… no sxsw, no etech… wah.

No one seems to believe that I’m not going to SXSW or Etech or CHI or any other tech conference this spring. I was hoping to be far enough along in my dissertation to stop by each for a day or so, but it’s not going to happen. Trust me, I really really really wanna. But I’m really really really not going to any tech conferences this spring. That said, you should. Everyone else that I know is going and it’s giving me an achy breaky heart to think about all of the fun that I will miss while I continue to fester in my PJs writing my dissertation. Please, do go, listen to amazing talks, play werewolf, and ask the goddesses of late night partying to support me in finishing my dissertation so that I can join you in the fall.

(I will still be attending the iSchool conference because my committee will be there.)

  • Keep working on your dissertation, danah. We enjoy seeing you at conferences but you’ve worked too hard to get this close to finishing your doctorate. You’re right to concentrate on the long-term and avoid short-term distractions for a little bit while you take care of necessary business. The conferences will be held again next year and Dr. boyd will surely be welcome at all of them!

    Hello danah–
Just a reader of your blog…
This is rather unrelated, but wondering if you had seen this article in the NYTimes yesterday:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/fashion/21webgirls.html?bl&ex=1203829200&en=3e9cf2694e0e6f40&ei=5087

Aside from the fact that it is in the Fashion section(??), it is interesting.

  • There will always be more tech conferences. And the next time we see you, we can buy you a drink to celebrate what you’re working on now. 🙂

  • I was going to beg some people I’ve worked with in media to try to help me get a press pass and/or try to pass off my blog as a qualifying outlet for press credentials, but I still don’t have the time (midterms!!!) or $ (hotels!) to go. SXSW is over spring break, but just too expensive to get down there and stay for that time. I thought about trying to bust my way into Toy Fair, too, since it was in NYC. Sighhh. I like new things and ideas!

  • I’ve lived in Austin forever and this is the first time I will be making it to SXSWi. Sorry to miss seeing you there. Maybe next time. It will be the first social media related conference I have ever attended.
