January 13, 2005Mac mini for the massesI've decided that the Mac mini shall be bought by Mac fetishists for the people in their lives for whom they provide all technical support. This includes parents, grandparents, siblings, bosses. etc. For this to work effectively, Mac must include one key application when they release Tiger: SOLITAIRE. Hey, but Macs come with Chess.
Actually, the chess that comes with the mac is extremely hard and I haven't beaten it by myself yet. Where's Kasparov when you need him?

Apple should buy out Solitaire Till Dawn ( http://www.semicolon.com/STDX.html ) and bundle it with all new Macs. It's far and away the best of the bunch.

For this to work, they need to include one small piece of hardware, too: a ps2/usb adaptor for the 99% of PC owners with a ps2 keyboard.

Wish -> Command. Tiger comes with Solitaire as one of the pre-installed Dashboard widgets.

How about Choplifter? Bring back the classics; Børderbund, Sierra, and even infocom (nothing like a text-adveture to while away the hours you should be working).
Is there a decent Mac FreeCell?

To be fair, we were already doing tech support, it's just now we won't be doing it for a platform we barely remember.

IMO, Mac Mini is simply Apple's belated response to mini-itx, which typically outstyle Apple's offerings.
Took 'em long enough... those SFF machines have been around for years!

Mike,
You're missing the significance of the Mac mini. Now there's a Mac for nearly anyone buying a computer, particularly one upgrading a Windows PC. This is going to be a huge year for Apple. Have you ever used OS X?

Don't underestimate the power of the force!
I'm a long-time mac user and avid fan. However, people will need further convincing as price, cool looks and integration with the iPod are just not enough. It's all boring stuff, but quite real to many PC laggards!
- cost of replacing legacy h/w and s/w
- compatibility with major pc applications
- fear of being left behind as pc technology evolves
- fear of new technology
- Don't perceive a difference between the platforms
- Expect Microsoft to retaliate with an upgrade 'real soon now'. (What are the millions of MS s/w engineers doing right now?)
I'd love it if apple became a real competitor. Life would be better. But, it took a long time to convince people the earth wasn't flat.

Some people call Macs expensive, the Mini adds a new twist. Compared to the lowest priced Dells the Mini is a better value. A lot of marketing sites are even giving em away for free for sign ups. This is new to the mac following in the iPods footsteps.
So far this has been working for a lot of people so I'm trying it too.

You have to sign up for a sponsor like blockbuster but then you can cancel after you sign up.

Yep, danah. That's exactly why I'm buying one. I'm gradually working out that the more of my family and friends are on Macs, the more time I spend showing them interesting new software and the less time I spend doing boring tech support tasks.
