August 9, 2004abuse of the term "personal"I just got an invite to yet another social network service - Multiply. The second paragraph is labeled "Personal message from {friend}" and it says: I've decided to add my network over on Multiply since there's a ton more I can do with it there. I've got my own personal web page where I can share my photos, journal, reviews, classifieds, etc. with you and all my other friends. I now go to Multiply regularly to check the message board and see the new stuff posted in my network. Accept my invitation and check it out for yourself. OK. I'm not an idiot. There's *NOTHING* personal about that message - it's all marketing speak. I'm just sooo thrilled to see the term "personal" get abused. ::grumble:: We're not even going to begin commenting on the import tools for Friendster and Orkut. Aren't we done with these replicas yet? Anyhow, i refuse. So don't invite me. Category: Posted by zephoria at August 9, 2004 5:07 PM

I received one today as well. Funny, first thing I thought was 'wonder what Danah Boyd's going to say about this yasn ... '
I got my answer ;-)
I went in and checked it out though. I was curious.

I did get one and I decided to bite. But I also like looking at new web UIs.
It definitely has an Orkut feel to it, although their icon looks very, very similar to Microsoft's MSN buddy.
One thing I found funny was that they specifically had "Recipes" as a tab.
I wonder if there is someone specifically trying to weaken the space of social networking by saturating the web with so many options that there will be no "network".

Is there a meta-social network out there or some kind of aggregator of networks? It seems there are too many walled gardens, that one should be able to see all one's n-degree friends and interact with them and let them interact with each other, regardless of which club they belong to. FOAF, xf, Sxif, etc will certainly help, I suppose as people pick them up.

I broke down and joined Multiply. But I am tired of entering the same data over and over again: the same preferences in music, movies, activities, etc. I must have these profiles scattered all over the web in different sites. Has anything dramatically changed after I joined orkut, friendster, ryze, tribe.net, multiply, evite. And there's a new one: .node (dot node). It comes from France.

Sorry about that invite, danah. Like others I impulsively decided to try the Orkut import just to see if it worked, without thinking about the repercussions, grrr. That Multiply is broken is increasingly obvious, and it's taking way too much bandwidth to discuss just how broken it is. We must learn to think before we geek.

I balked at using the Orkut import because it felt very weird to me to give someone my Orkut password.
I did enjoy some things about Multiply (Jon, I think I found out about you there, by browsing John Perry Barlow's friends list). I noticed JPB quickly deleted his presence there - I'm guessing because of the questionable content rights situation or the unwanted emails sent to friends ... Multiply is getting a big thumbs down it seems. Dotnode is cool, although it's clear the developer is not fluent in English.
