{"id":387,"date":"2002-09-27T11:19:22","date_gmt":"2002-09-27T11:19:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ubuntu.my\/wp30\/archives\/2002\/09\/27\/perception.html"},"modified":"2002-09-27T11:19:22","modified_gmt":"2002-09-27T11:19:22","slug":"perception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zephoria.org\/thoughts\/archives\/2002\/09\/27\/perception.html","title":{"rendered":"perception"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a former student of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.brown.edu\/people\/avd\/\">Andy<\/a>&#8216;s, i was indoctrinated into believing the power of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.brown.edu\/exploratory\/\">educational software<\/a>, but frankly, most tools used to teach tend to bore me to tears and most uses of Flash\/Java to explain concepts have about the same education weight as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.brown.edu\/courses\/cs015\/\">CS15<\/a> skit.  That&#8217;s not to say that they&#8217;re bad, just that they&#8217;re not that informative.<\/p>\n<p>For that reason, i am pleasantly amazed by how impressive <a href=\"http:\/\/www-bcs.mit.edu\/gaz\/#\">these perception illusion Flash demos are<\/a>.  As an undergraduate, i did a lot of studying about perception and color and whatnot, so i&#8217;ve always been particularly psyched by <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/bcs\/adelson.html\">Adelson<\/a>&#8216;s research on perception and lightness.  But these examples make the concepts clear and powerful, far more than the terrible text-book equivalents.
