Picture: Jesse Chan-Norris

Every day, my friend Jesse Chan-Norris posts a new photograph from his collection. Yesterday, he posted a picture of a cat in a bucket and... well... I couldn't resist.

MacArthur Series on Digital Media and Learning (it's live!)

I am very very very pleased to announce that the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Series on Digital Media and Learning is now out in the world and ready for your affection. The purpose of the series is to "examine the effect of digital media tools on how people learn, network, communicate, and play, and how growing up with these tools may affect a person's sense of self, how they express themselves, and their ability to learn, exercise judgment, and think systematically." The series is published by MIT Press and contains six books:

(Btw: I linked to the paperbacks. If you like hardcovers, go here.)

Each book has 8-10 peer-reviewed articles plus an intro and foreword. The articles are academic in nature, but written for a public audience and meant to be accessible and relevant to public discourse.

While I encourage everyone to purchase the books (they're cheap!), individual articles are also available for download here thanks to MacArthur and MIT Press. My article "Why Youth Heart Social Network Sites: The Role of Networked Publics in Teenage Social Life" is part of the "Youth, Identity, and Digital Media" book. I'm super excited about this series and I hope you are too.

Also, for those who don't know, MacArthur is doing unbelievable work in building a community for those invested in digital media and learning. To learn more, check out the website or the Spotlight blog. MIT Press is also launching The International Journal of Learning and Media to collect and publish research in this area.

LOLCat Bible = infinite entertainment

I've been traveling constantly for over five weeks now. Whenever I'm feeling annoyed, I open up my Sidekick and stare at the LOLcat Bible for a few minutes.

"Teh Ceiling Cat giv me cheezburger, teh Ceiling Cat takded mah cheezburger awai. I stil laiks teh Ceiling Cat." -- Job 1:20

I don't know why this gives me infinite amounts of pleasure, but it really does. There's something absolutely amazing about webfolk engaged in a collective action project to translate the bible into cat pidgin. I can't work out whether or not these webfolk are religious, but I wouldn't be surprised if many of them grew up Christian and know the bible well but aren't practicing (many practicing folks see this as denigrating the bible, although most of my friends just think it's damn funny).

I'm really hoping that a linguist out there will look into this phenomenon. One of the primary language sources that most linguists use to analyze languages is the bible. Missionaries went around the world translating the bible into all sorts of local languages so it's the only source text that exists in most languages. So here we have a collective action project where webfolk somehow know the grammar of cat pidgin. But what exactly are all of those rules? How does this collective action linguistic move resemble or differ from other pidgins and creoles? I just think it'd be a fun project to linguistically suss out how this phenomenon took shape.

In the meantime, I'm happy just to read and giggle.

"Oh hai. In teh beginnin Ceiling Cat waz invisible, An he maded the skiez An da Urf, but he no eated it." -- Genesis 1:1

Update: Apparently, there's a bunch of linguistic analysis. And, hackers have created LOLCat.NET

Continuous City: Berkeley play involving SNSs

If you're in the Bay Area, go check out Continuous City, a funky play at Berkeley concerning what it means to live in a networked society (with various references to social network sites). I would if I were in town.

CONTINUOUS CITY is a meditation on how contemporary experiences of location and dislocation stretch us to the maximum as our “networked” selves occupy multiple locations. We want to examine not only how we see what’s happening in the world, but how we deliver it to an audience—using “real world” events to include “real world” people.

SHOW: Continuous City: Excerpts from a Work-in-Progress by The Builders Association, created with students from UC Berkeley. Admission is $14/10/8. Tickets can be purchased at the door or at http://theater.berkeley.edu. Performances at 8pm on October 5, 6, & 13 and 2pm on October 7 & 14.

a different approach to medicine

Jay Parkinson is a doctor in Williamsburg who does e-visits. Think you need stitches? Send him a picture and he'll advise via video chat/IM/email/etc. It's a pretty fascinating approach to medicine and I'm curious how well it'll scale. Unfortunately, this approach doesn't play nice with health insurance. I'm having a hard time imagining who will pay a annual fee for this who wouldn't have health insurance. Don't get me wrong, I'd *love* to have a personal doctor but the cost would be prohibitive for me. And it's all fine and well to do this instead of traditional health if you're relatively healthy, but if things go dreadfully wrong, you're going to want health insurance. Does a practice like this discourage young people from being responsible in maintaining health insurance? Anyhow, I'm fascinated. Cuz goddess knows I hate clinics and hospitals.

MacArthur Competition wrt New Digital Media and Learning

The MacArthur Foundation (the folks who fund my advisors and thus support my research) have just announced an open competition to encourage innovation and knowledge-sharing surrounding new digital media and learning. There are two types of awards:

- Innovation Awards will support learning entrepreneurs and builders of new digital environments for informal learning. Winners will receive $250,000 or $100,000.

- Knowledge Networking Awards will support communicators in connecting, mobilizing, circulating or translating new ideas around digital media and learning. Winners will receive a $30,000 base award and up to $75,000.

If this might be up your alley, check out their announcement and the competition homepage for more information.

Personally, I'm really interested in the knowledge networking awards. This is explicitly to help get knowledge out far and wide, to put theory into practice, and to make practice replicable. This is a great opportunity for educators and journalists and others who want to take what is known to the next level. Too many good ideas get locked down in small experiments or academic articles that few will ever hear of. The more effort there is to scale good ideas, the better we'll all be! So start brewing some good ideas!

cat predicts deaths, web folk LOL

Oscar the cat lives in the dementia ward of a nursing home. When one of its residents is about to die, Oscar comes in and settles into their bed, comforting them for the last few hours of life. Researchers and doctors are intrigued by this. How does Oscar know that people are going to die?

Web folks can't help but LOL. They want to know if Oscar is really predicting deaths or causing them. Their discomfort is emerging through the production of LOL cats, arguing for both in that distanced way that you know comes from nervous laughter. I mean, it is kinda eerie that a cat knows that someone's going to die before they do, right?

music to live by

This week, Apple announced that it would make EMI albums available at MP3s for a premium. For the most part, i'm pleased (although a bit disturbed that you are to pay a premium for said songs). While it's great that iTunes is finally doing what users want, i think it's important for folks to realize that many smaller music sellers have been doing this for quite some time. I'm particularly partial to Fake Science

If, like me, your music tastes are heavily in the downtempo, dub, breakbeats, and chill zone, iTunes rarely has what you want and offers terrible recommendations (while i love Radiohead, they are not the only electronica out there). When i get bored of my music, i tend to go to Fake Science and download a handful of their new arrivals - $5 an album (MP3 only) and most of it goes to the artist. I actually feel good about buying music from them and am regularly astounded by the high quality of music that they choose to sell there (they're rather picky).

Anyhow, if you're looking for some new music to work to, check them out. My top three recommendations would be:

(This recommendation is genuine - they don't know that i sent you so shh don't tell them.)

conference circuit

I'm about to begin my crazy spring conference circuit. First up is SXSW where i'm speaking about teens at 11.30 on Saturday and interviewing Henry Jenkins at 11.30 on Monday. For those attending the conference, do *not* miss the latter. Henry's ideas are of utmost importance to those involved in social media and i'm excited to help him share with a new audience. Following SXSW, i will be interviewing teens in Texas before heading to ICWSM to talk about social media. Immediately following that is Etech where i will be giving a fun talk entitled "Incantations for Muggles." Humor me. I think it's a hysterical title and it makes me giggle every time. Each of these conferences will provide a different slant on social media and i'd encourage you to attend the ones most relevant to you (aka: all).

After the tech circuit, i will be off to New York, Kansas, and Iowa for a combination of speaking gigs and interviewing teens. And then back to LA for 10 days. It's gonna be brutal but i'm looking forward to it.

Anyhow, i'm letting you know this because my response time is probably going to go below its normal terrible time. I'm really stoked for the conferences though so i hope you'll join me and come out and play. I apologize that i won't schedule meetings during these events - i treat them as a mini-vacation where i release myself from schedules. Join me on that level and i promise they will be fun and goofy!

a random shout-out

Lately, lots of folks have been asking me for a picture for this that or the other. I have a lot of low-res silly photos, but i don't have many "good" photographs of me, let alone high-res ones. At Web2.0 2005, James Duncan Davidson took an amazing photo of me staring at my Sidekick. Somehow, i think it captures me quite well. So i begged him for it and i've been using it prolifically ever since. Anyhow, this photo keeps appearing all over the web associated with me and i feel guilty that he nevers gets any credit for that awesome shot. So i wanted to give him a shout-out. I'm not sure if he reads this blog so if you talk to him, tell him i say he rocks (go swarm love!).

heckle drive

I hate driving. Or rather, i hate when people are on *my* road. I spend a lot of time talking to them, even though they can't hear me. I've always wanted a way to express what i'm really thinking. "Turn off your damn high beams." "You should have your lights on." "Do you need to tailgate?" Etc. According to Popgadget, there's a perfect tool for my road rage: a href="http://www.au-my.com/english/Drivemocion.htm">Drive Mocion.

It's kinda like a hecklebot for the road, no? Oooh... i want one!

pick me! sxsw voting is open

If you are going to SXSW this year (which you should), voting for panels is now open. I'm telling you this in part for selfish reasons. I want you to pick me! More specifically, i want you to pick the panel that Andrea Forte is moderating entitled "Under 18: Blogs, Wikis, and Online Social Networks for Youth." It's near the bottom so make sure you read till the end. Andrea rocks and it's her idea but it will involve my big mouth so if you love me, you'll pick this, right?? ::wink::

aggregating the "best of" blog entries

I have put together a page of "best of" blog entries. Based on conversations with people and going back through what people saved in del.icio.us, i pulled out essays and entries from the last two years that people seemed to find particularly valuable. I will be editing this list (and recommendations are *very* welcome). In particular, i haven't gone back through the Friendster posts yet (or anything pre-del.icio.us) so i'm sure there are other nuggets in there that people will be interested in. Right now, the best-of includes about 40 entries on everything from social networks to blogging to privacy to academia to Wikipedia. Some of those essays make me wince looking back but i still think that they're valuable. Let me know what you think!

Pharyngula just wrote this blog entry about experiments done a few years back where couples (who all seemed to be amateur street acrobats) had sex in an MRI tube to help researchers understand how all of those parts fit together. The research is definitely fascinating, but the experimental method is utterly hysterical. Thank goodness for viagra, right?

"You are bidding on a mistake"

"You are bidding on a mistake" is the beginning of the description for the auction of these leather pants on eBay. The description goes on to explain how this man came to make the mistake of buying these pants (involves a girl) and why you should buy these pants (because you're into Queen, a rock star, gay, a biker or a Frenchman). There's nothing better to make you smile than to read someone's creative approach to trying to sell their crap.

The question/answers are particularly hysterical (and offensive):

Q: I'm confused, is Donna Karan a rock star or a transvestite?
A: It's a very fine line, really.

animated boinking on furniture

Matt wrote the most hysterical entry about Brazilian furniture store Tok&Stok's furniture selection interface which focuses on how you can have sex on various furniture items. Not only can you choose pre-selected positions, you can create your own sexual favorite and animate it (complete with hearts).

Presumably they created their Valentines Book of Styles after receiving too much icky returned merchandise or witnessing too many unmentionable incidents on floor demos. "Try before you buy"? Not so much. "Um, yeah, Union of the Tiger isn't compatible with these arm rests. Oh, sorry if the cushions are stuck together." -- Matt

The humor in this overrides the heteronormativity that Matt rightfully points out. (Ah, fellow Brownies...)

off to see the wizard

It's that time of the year. The time when my city drains itself of bottled water, rebar and fuzzy furry items and heads off to create an alternate reality in the desert. As a self-diagnosed workaholic, i love Burning Man because it's a guaranteed opportunity to goof around with my friends in 10 days of prescribed play time. Plus, i get to wear ridiculous items and build dome-like things. I haven't seen much of my friends lately so the opportunity to see them in the desert is just heavenly.

I will be camping with False Profit. My previous camp (Monkey vs. Robot) was acquired by False Profit:

For the first time ever, False Profit will have a corporate presence at Burningman in 2005. The rampant success of the Monkey vs Robot venture in 2003 and 2004 proves that this emerging market is ready for the cultural advancements and life-quality enhancements pioneered by FP here in SF. Be on the lookout for exciting new products and services brought to you by False Profit on the playa this year, with Zero Percent Financial Return Guaranteed as always.

Expect to see corporate branding, tree-grown money and perhaps a few exploding market bubbles.

I will be offline until September 6, locatable only in dust. I suspect it will take me a while to get back to email. If there are any emergencies, call my mom.

Ambidextrous Magazine

I just received the first issue of Ambidextrous Magazine:

Ambidextrous Magazine is the design journal of the nascent Stanford d.school. It is a magazine for the wider design community, which includes engineers and ethnographers, psychologists and philosophers. Rather than focusing on promoting product, Ambidextrous exposes the people and processes involved in design.

Ambidextrous is a forum for the cross-disciplinary, cross-market community of people with an academic, professional and personal interest in design. The magazine is geared toward high subscriber participation and interaction. It is expressly designed to be informal, irreverent, and fun to read.

It's a fanstastic complement to the O'Reilly Make. Instead of focusing on how to make things, it focuses on the design of things (with a science/tech emphasis). The first issue covers everything from vibrating razors to Graffiti Archaeology, HCI sketches to a review of Gladwell's "Blink" for the design community. If you're interested in design/tech, definitely check it out!

reshelving project

I love Jane. She just announced The Ministry of Reshelving and she wants your help:

How to Serve the Ministry of Reshelving

1. Select a local bookstore to carry out your reshelving activities.

2. Download and print "This book has been relocated by the Ministry of Reshelving" bookmarks and "All copies of 1984 have been relocated" notecards to take with you to the bookstore. Or make your own. We recommend bringing a notecard and 5-10 bookmarks to each store.

3. Go to the bookstore and locate its copies of George Orwell's 1984. Unless the Ministry of Reshelving has already visited this bookstore, it is probably currently incorrectly classified as "Fiction" or "Literature."

4. Discreetly move all copies of 1984 to a more suitable section, such as "Current Events", "Politics", "History", "True Crime", or "New Non-Fiction."

5. Insert a Ministry of Reshelving bookmark into each copy of any book you have moved. Leave a notecard in the empty space the books once occupied.

6. If you spot other incorrectly classified books, feel free to relocate them.

7. Please report all reshelving efforts to the Ministry. Email your store name, location, # of 1984 copies reshelved, and any other reshelving activities conducted, to reshelving @ avantgame.com. Photos of your mission can be uploaded to Flickr, tagged as "reshelving", and submitted to the Ministry of Reshelving group.

dr. toast : oz so late - music to chill to

In prep for vacation, i've been organizing my iPod. I went through the hellish process of creating genres for everything and generating Playlists. One of my favorite genres - psychill - was sadly lacking. It's the genre that i listen to the most because it's ideal calm music to work to. Yet, i only had three artists there - bluetech, Shpongle and dr. toast. Part of the problem is that i honestly don't know what else belongs in this genre.

So, i approached Toast to ask for good things in his genre and, bless his heart, he made me a mix of vacation music to chill by. In return, i wanted to do a shout-out for anyone who's looking for good music to chill or work to. His album oz so late is just beautiful and i've listened to it perpetually since it came out. Click here for some song samples.

OK - i have a funny feeling that i'm supposed to be offended by this caricature of me:

But, frankly, i'm utterly amused that anyone would put me in such a silly comic that is mocking a lot of folks and issues that i know.

Of course, my first thought was that it doesn't look like me. As Coates pointed out, i would never carry a bag like that, i don't have a tattoo and there's no white fuzzy hat or armbands (which i would wear with such a sleeveless dress).

And i know that i'm supposed to be ragingly pissed at the misogynistic interpretation of me, but i just can't help but laugh. ::slapping own wrist:: Bad feminist, bad.

Prix Ars Electronica Digital Communities

Like Joi, i will be on the Prix Ars Electronica digital communities jury. We have been asked to nominate communities that should be recognized (or you can submit your own). My trouble in determining what to nominate stems from the fact that some of the most valuable communities are inherently niche communities and thus, i'm not likely to know about them. This is where i need your help. Do you know of communities that should be nominated? If you're the creator of a particular community, you should definitely submit yourself, but if you know of something that i should know about for this category, please let me know ASAP in the comments. Some types of communities that i'm interested in knowing about include: fan fiction communities, communities of youth, communities for marginalized populations, effective support groups, communities of sharing, etc.

For the second time in 2005, Prix Ars Electronica will honor important achievements by digital communities. This category focuses attention on the wide-ranging social impact of the Internet as well as on the latest developments in the fields of social software, mobile communications and wireless networks.

The "Digital Communities" category is open to political, social, and cultural projects, initiatives, groups, and scenes from all over the world utilizing digital technology to better society and assume social responsibility. It is meant to recognize the initiators and propagators of these communities as well as the developers of the relevant technologies, and to honor those whose work contributes to the establishment and proliferation of Digital Communities as well as provide understanding and research into them.

The prizes in this category will total 20,000 Euros: one Golden Nica (10,000 Euro), two Awards of Distinction (5,000 Euros each) and up to 12 Honorary Mentions.

For full information please check http://www.aec.at/en/prix/communities/communities.asp
Online submission: http://www.aec.at/en/prix/registration/index.asp
Deadline for submissions: March 11, 2005
