Surely by not supporting kids' sociality learning, adults become obstacles. But could it be that navigating adults as obstacles to sociality is something that kids must learn to do? Just a thought.

This post speaks so many truths as it is always important as you assess the importance of social media where it has been most criticized. In the world of the digital natives social media platforms are now essential in relationship building and maintaining relationships. Social media needs to be embraced and accepted as a legitimate form of communication as it is where the future is going.

Your quote "Rather than demonizing social media or dismissing its educational value, I believe that we need to embrace the environments that youth are using to gather and help them learn to navigate the murky waters of sociality." really resonated with me.

I think many teachers would be happy to do this but many school departments limit teacher / student interaction on such sites. In Australia many schools have "social networking policies" that impose limits on using social media sites. I am disappointed by the policies as I feel that they are definately 'demonizing' social media.

funny, how the same situation develops in prisons and schools/parents, where the parents/instructors/guards try to control the social interactions? Do they both fear uprisings????

Power struggles always flow like water....

"They're committed to learning; why aren't we supporting them in doing so?"

In my experience with teaching, many instructors are scared of their ignorance (which is inevitable, to some degree) being exposed. We think, incorrectly, that if we don't appear to be superhuman repositories of all knowledge (at least that relevant to the subject matter we teach), then we will 'lose control' of the class, and do a bad job.

When students are learning about something we are not familiar with, many choose to dismiss it as irrelevant, because they cannot control it.

Encoding fail - the page is being sent as ISO-8859-1, but the French is UTF-8. See the <a href="http://www.movabletype.org/documentation/appendices/config-directives/publishcharset.html" rel="nofollow">MT docs</a> for how to change it.

danah,
I completely agree with your thoughts here. Youth need a place to socially screw up where they can learn, and not be reminded of it for the rest of their lives. I've actually dedicated my last two articles to the idea that social media can help accomplish this.
