In most free hetero online dating sites, the vast majority of girls are fake. They write men (which gets them all excited because few women write to men). Guys write back, curious to learn more. And when the girl writes back, she tells you about how you can visit her site to learn more. Of course, the site is a porn site where you have to pay to enter. This works well because a fraction of the men ::shrug:: and figure it could be hot and another chunk think that they are conversing with a porn star, which would be super hott. When companies take down these hott girl profiles, it disrupts the whole economy. "Real" girls don't want to participate because the caliber of women just went down and most women want to be connected to other hot women. Men leave because the quality was diminished. And down the spiral we go. Well, it seems like fake profiles have taken on a new form on Friendster and MySpace. Sure enough, in writing back, Paul got a link to photos. Hot girls, happy to sell you their porn. Yay! (But why aren't they contacting me???) So how bad will it get? (And does the same thing operate in gay male culture?) Category: yasns

Last year I started an experiment with a Fakester Girl account on MySpace, which recently ended (I'm a guy). Initially, I wanted to see if I could get a Free Ipod (which I did) and then a Free Flat Screen (got that one as well). I ended up building up the network to thousand, upon thousands of members.
The larger the network grew, the more legitimate it seemed. There is an art to creating network percolation on these sites and I started establishing a social network percolation rule set (which I tested) and recently must have attracted too much attention as network growth was exploding on my page.
I don't know if there is a correlation, but the account was taken down shortly after the NewCorp purchase of Myspace.This also may be due to the fact that suddenly my Fakester Girl was an avid Online Poker Player and there were plenty of affiliate links in the profile generating substantial click throughs and sign ups on the Poker sites. Some decent money has started to trickle in as a result. Ahh, but that ride is over.
The thing that amazed me were the emails the men sent. I started collecting them and thought they would make for an interesting installation that I am putting together that I am calling "The Secret Architecture of Hook Ups".. My Fakester got modeling invitations, invitations to partying openings, club premiers, etc.. I thought it would be interesting to see the tactics used by men to attract the attention of a "Hott Girl" on Myspace. The similarity of tactics is pretty shocking. Also, there is some anecdotal evidence that there are regional and local similarities to the tactics used.
More than anything, I'm still shocked that people take these - Hott Girl accounts to be real - there are some real ones on there, but the vast majority seem to be fake. I started realizing there are plenty of fake Hott Guy accounts as well. It made me think this is maybe the social networking world's equivalent of a REALITY SHOW. Sort of like a "reality based" social network avatar. A projection of something someone is aspiring to be.. :)

Gay Male culture: I wouldn't say it happens as much, and it really depends on the ecosystem. Gay.com has a big problem with 'bots, but I think most users filter them out. They all have one of 5 different photos, which makes it easy. Other sites (manhunt, m4m4now, etc.) have almost no fakesters directing people to porn sites. (Of course, they have less features for free compared to gay.com, and a stronger editorial hand.) And all of these pale to the unabashed total reality of bear sites.
I'm going to hazard a guess that it has something to do with the relative scarcity. In the gay male culture, there's not the disproportionate number of males to females that occur in hetero sites. What I do notice is more "sweetening" of the goods -- pictures are more idealized, more perfect than the reality, as opposed to out-right fakery.

I haven't received porn solicitations through MySpace, but a couple of girl-profiles advertising other things like this one which seems to basically be a shill for the upcoming debut of a new lad-magazine; and a couple of other girl-profiles which messaged me (pretty obviously) attempting to set the groundwork for a Nigerian 419 scam. :/
