I balked at using the Orkut import because it felt very weird to me to give someone my Orkut password.

I did enjoy some things about Multiply (Jon, I think I found out about you there, by browsing John Perry Barlow’s friends list). I noticed JPB quickly deleted his presence there – I’m guessing because of the questionable content rights situation or the unwanted emails sent to friends … Multiply is getting a big thumbs down it seems. Dotnode is cool, although it’s clear the developer is not fluent in English.

Sorry about that invite, danah. Like others I impulsively decided to try the Orkut import just to see if it worked, without thinking about the repercussions, grrr. That Multiply is broken is increasingly obvious, and it’s taking way too much bandwidth to discuss just how broken it is. We must learn to think before we geek.

I broke down and joined Multiply. But I am tired of entering the same data over and over again: the same preferences in music, movies, activities, etc. I must have these profiles scattered all over the web in different sites. Has anything dramatically changed after I joined orkut, friendster, ryze, tribe.net, multiply, evite. And there’s a new one: .node (dot node). It comes from France.

Is there a meta-social network out there or some kind of aggregator of networks? It seems there are too many walled gardens, that one should be able to see all one’s n-degree friends and interact with them and let them interact with each other, regardless of which club they belong to. FOAF, XFN, Sxif, etc will certainly help, I suppose as people pick them up.
