proud to be in SF

Another thing lost in my lack of blogging is my absolute joy and love towards San Francisco right now (regardless of the hilarity of those who despise my beloved city).

While Gilmore and Lessig discuss the legal implications of gay marriage, i just keep watching all of the smiling and joyous couples. I can’t take the discussions seriously because i’m all teary-eyed every time i see the grins of newlyweds.

I understand the long-term implications… I understand that this will be a dividing discussion during the election… I understand that this might not be legal… I understand that this doesn’t solve the problems with marriage… But damnit, i’m soo fucking proud to live in a city that stands up for equality in the face of hatred. And i’m sooo happy for my friends who’ve gotten married and for those who can in the future.

I’ve always despised marriage because of its religious implications, but more personally, horrified that i may not be able to have the rights to support my partner. I still don’t like the religious nature of marriage and the underlying assumptions, but i certainly support equality under the law. And i’m proud of San Francisco for realizing the importance of that.

I’m totally jealous of anyone who gets to live in SF/the Bay area. It’s one of the most progressive places on the planet – period.

Bay Area is a love/hate relationship with me… it’s a great place, sure… but many work 10-12 hour days just to pay rent… which doesn’t leave a lot of time for fun. That’s why so many other cities are better to live in… while the Bay Area is a fun visit.

This is one of the biggest problems with the tech element in SF. People got involved with tech through passion originally. They *wanted* to work absurd hours, to make their dreams reality. People flocked because they were getting so much money and attention. They worked crazy hours to compete. Prices went through the roof. The market crashed. The prices didn’t die down. Now people work absurd hours out of need instead of passion. I agree it’s frustrating, but i do wonder if it will fade…

I am a friend of Barlow’s, and linked to your blog from his awhile back. I enjoy visiting here when I have time, thank you.

I love visiting San Francisco (from Colorado). The place is tilted in this zanny and beautiful way, and it seems there are random acts of genius on just about every street corner.

I’m proud of your city, too.

    Cheers,
    Kate
