My name is danah boyd and I'm a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research, a Research Assistant Professor in Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University, a Visting Researcher at Harvard Law School, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales. I received my PhD from the School of Information at UC-Berkeley. I spend 1/3 of my time in Cambridge, MA, 1/3 in New York, NY, and 1/3 in the air. buddyzoo

OK.. I gave in and put my data into BuddyZoo (solely because it is a project being done by a well intended CalTech student). BuddyZoo is another game at social networks.. this time, they are looking at AIM buddy lists. And this time they are doing a visualization (although very limited). Let’s see where he takes this puppy…

  • They’ve done some viz, but they don’t let users run them with our own data… how come no one (friendster, ryze, etc) gets that that is the killer feature for sixdegrees stuff? And, it would be the perfect interface for browsing people because it keeps you oriented on what your connection to them is…

    Well, visualizations are often confusing and rarely well done. It’s a killer app, but it has to be done right.. that’s the trick. n-dimensions worth of data on a 2D screen has to make a lot of sense to be meaningful… of course, you’ve noted a pet peeve of mine…
