11Oct04 How do corporations enter into the picture? Issue of ideology and issue of real politics... Barbara Boxer has to raise $35k a day so many people in Congress on both sides have to vote for these things.. there is a difference between understanding politics in congress ... What about pragmatic politics? What are the framings used by corporations? When corporations make profits, they hire people, so jobs is a metaphor... raising the entire metaphorical structure of the economy... See paper on Alternet -- Living Wage paper.. read for next week. (may be on the Rockridge Inst site too) Most of the arguments about corporations are around: --market as a force of nature --organic frames --metaphors that are needed but not there.. --paper looks at how you talk about ethical business What is the frame of left and right? People are ordered based on positions... people are in the middle if they have some middle positions even if they have conservative frames as well.. Schwartzenager.. could be almost totally conservative, but have some middle positions.. this is done by making a list and ordering.. but doesn't really work because people there are words that are used in a way to be the opposite of what they discuss: compassionate conservative.. Why? under the condition of when people think they are weak... they can't say were the mean conservatives.. or this is the dirty air iterative... so the way to counter this, or you know they are weak, name it for what it really is, and then people will know what something is more clearly.. that's what Kerry was doing but he forgot how to do it the other night.. Metaphors and Terror: Kerry saying the war on terror is the Bush metaphor: the hunt... it is the original framing.. so what kinds of ways, because he's bought into the Bush framing.. so how do you reframe that? So by using Bush's metaphors, he's saying he can be tough.. or by saying, I believe in marriage, he's evoking the civil marriage framing, even though Kerry has come out for same-sex marriages.. but he could reframe it as the government shouldn't impose any intrusion on freedoms... government should not tell you who you can and can't marry... on abortion, say the government must protect women who are threatened... women who are raped in the military are forced to take time off at their own expense, go to another country, and have an abortion.. but women should not be forced to have a child they have due to rape.. or should women who are endangered health-wise be forced to have a baby that endangers their health... so we afford certain rights to some people who are in lifetime commitments, etc.. Since Kerry has co-opted so many of Bush's frames, then what next? Kerry has not gotten into trust.. so he could say, Bush has sent troops in, but not armored them.. so you can't trust him... or, say, what is a deficit? Future unpaid taxes.. either by you later on or by your children, and with interest, so by creating a deficit, Bush has raised your future taxes and your childrens.. Bush is a tax raiser... they will have to be paid.. Why does Kerry keep saying "I have a plan" it sounds specific, not wishy-washy... But he needs to name the parts of his plan.. rally the allies, train the iraqis, get out.. three things, that's it.. so then Kerry can say, I have a plan, Bush doesn't -- three or four things.. no more no less, that's a plan What about saying, Iraq has been made into a breeding ground by America.. Sounds like, if you get 75% of Al Queda.. but in fact, there are more than ever What is the difference between framing and spin? Framing invokes values and is done on the offense, framing can impose a structure that is not embarrassing - it's what people really believe .. where spinning occurs after disasters happen, defensive, is manipulative use of a frame, an attempt to take an embarrassing event and make it positive., there is manipulative language "clean coal" is an example of Orwellian language which is the opposite, but then there is spin: "partial birth abortion" or the "marriage tax" -- the impose a frame that they know is not accurate but that will manipulate people to accept the frame... EX: Bush says, 'he says he'll lower your taxes but you can't believe him, so look at his record...' or 'he voted against giving body armor to troops' but in fact, Kerry didn't want to give $20 billion to Halliburton, so he voted against that.. so by voting against the whole, Kerry is made out to look bad, but in fact, he voted against the part he didn't like -- a metaonomy is used against Kerry.. -- this is "vote distortion" -- if a bill has things you are for, and things you are against, so by saying that you were for the things you were against, and against the things you were for, that's "vote distortion"... Kerry doesn't seem to be going in for the kill, he seems to be holding back.. there is a difference between people liking you and thinking you are nice, and so people think if you are nice, you will get votes, but that's a mistake, the just have to like you -- it's like the guy can't deliver the punch line, the frame that sums it up, that has all the entailments you want What are the types of conservatives? -- social conservatives, -- religious -- economic -- libertarian -- neo or thorough-going conservatives What makes them conservative? Strict father model.. applied to either economics, or social issues. or religious... and the self-interest on is for the libertarian... and the neo conservatives -- using the power of the state to apply a strict father model ... and the thorough going conservatives.. who want to apply it to each and every part.. What unites progressives... and what divides them? modes of thought --Identity politics --social --economic --environmental what unites: --local interests --idealism vs. pragmatism ---- pragmatism: will it work in the world and will it work politically --degree of activism? active or moderate? --degree of change? radical or moderate? So if you have a progressive who says 1. you have to be pragmatic (everything we do has to work politically), 2. asks whether something will work in the world.. 3. given the divisions in the country, work slowly for change.. and 4. most issues are socioeconomic issues.. class, etc That's Hillary Clinton But the Centrist position: means winning right now means getting financial support from corporations.. What else brings people together: values, a common enemy, principles like equality and democracy, equity.. people who work for a living should be able to make a living.. democracy.. everyone gets a say, open government, transparency, constructive role for government.. for a better future, minimize concentrations for corporate and media power.. an effective government, an efficient government.. So what is bad government and what is good government? Good Government does not intrude on your rights.. makes people safe, educated, makes investments for everyone.. promotes ethical business.. by regulating and through other means, making alliances via foreign policy, protect the country, foreign aid such as humanitarian (metaphor now is that a nation is a person, maximizing self-interest..) terrorism is about groups of people There are NGO's being attracted by conservatives... Bush has the view of other countries hurting our business interests.. where as Kerry says we are all part of the same human fabric or interest.. Nation as family.. doesn't translate across the world in the conservative model.. "moral norms" policy, where there is nurturing at all levels.. Then there are policy directions as opposed to policies: -- redistributes wealth in an equitable fashion ---- an economy that gives everyone a chance -- protection from harm -- environment is clean, healthy, safe -- nature is preserved for future generations -- everyone is well informed about events in the world by the media -- open government -- equal rights there are values, political principles, policies directions, and programs, so you could have a democratic vision to unite these.. -- there is competition for resources, and programs can go off in another direction from the policy, but you want to have programs that spell out policy directions in the most constructive way possible, and make them so they don't divide people, So setting up a party based on programs, it page 94 of "don't think of an elephant" -- conservatives have family values, strong defense, free markets, lower taxes, smaller government So progressives could have: -broad prosperity, higher taxes, effective government, mutual responsibility for care, ethical business, Responding to Conservatives section: The conversation has a strict father and nurturing parent model.. strict father conversation is embattled, nurturing parent is cohesive.. the form of the discourse also fits the models how to talk to conservatives: idea is to activate the nurturant model... don't try to win or convince, because it's competitive.. rather just convince them that you have values just invoke the nurturant parent model.. invoke an inhibition for punishment will inhibit a metaphorical mapping for punishment as a solution... basically remind that person of what severe punishment felt like... for people who were beaten as a child, they may respect and fear together the moral authority, and so it's perpetuating.. but you can get people into their feelings of how people feel, get them to empathize with others who were beaten and how that felt, not focus much on themselves.. it's empathy instead of their feeling of a moral authority.. Don't use strict father means to win an argument over nurturant values... have a calm discussion.. and then stop.. Show respect. No one will listen if you don't respect them. Avoid cheap shots. Right will often say they 'under attack' by liberals.. so if they are not under attack then it is hard to prove that model to them and you can just going on.. avoid the shouting match.. --if you have moral outrage.. show it without using your temper or control.. if you shout, they win, so keep controlled, sincere, hold your ground, be on offense, if you feel on defense, refrain and go back to something that is clearly yours, never whine, plead, don't use rising intonations... show optimism, convey compassionate conviction without losing control... Can try introducing your frames into discussion, see what they think... talk about the deficit as unpaid future taxes... raising taxes without a vote... Don't get into a discussion where someone else controls the floor.. if unequal, don't do it... Tell stories.. with a progressive punchline.. where the story only makes sense from a progressive viewpoint... Practice reframing in your head.. Get a stock of wedge issues... --- abortion and military rape treatment --- mercury pollution Civil discourse, and the idea of not expecting to win... Say what you believe.. be sincere.. be the change you want to make.. In a public discussion with an audience, the same rules hold.. why? you want to convince the audience of your frames.. and you want it to be civil, to hear your values, and show that you can stand up for yourself and have dignity.. not maybe on TV but with some sort of audience... What the right wants (section): On education, they are interested in testing, vouchers, evolution, pledge of allegiance -- how does this fit together Why not worry about deficits? What about abu grabe? (Fox news is proud of not disturbing audience by showing pictures) Why do they want a culture war? Why do they want to talk about God in the way they do? Buckley: God and Man and Yale --- God is in a hierarchy, and is all powerful and good, so God is a way of linking prosperity and morality.. with a hierarchical structure.. --- notion of moral authority and power fit together.. and sets rules and laws and punishes if necessary --- God the father.. the ultimate father in the strict father model with a hierarchy of servitude and merit ----- God above man, man above children, men above women, people above nature, --- Russell Kurt - hierarchy of merit --- See this in charity ------ can be people who are down on their luck, but are disciplined, so they deserve it.. --- obedience to a moral authority Economics: --- Gap between rich and poor, and the gap will increase, and why? because those people don't deserve it.. --- Conservatives don't need merit.. because they are disciplined and therefore they deserve it.. the ownership society.. --- Competition: want to extend free markets.. --- Government and social programs are immoral and should be eliminated Education: --- Testing establishes discipline and merit ------ separates the good from the bad, and good schools from bad schools --- What is the ultimate goal.. so they can privatize education... so that people can make money on it, but also to inculcate a certain set of values... ------ want to support and extend the conservative value system --- As long as teachers are nurturers, they are working against conservative values --- Take over school boards, so they can control text book purchasing ------ UCLA project on history to redo teaching of Am Hist, so more accurate... during the Clinton Admin, and Lynn Cheney got it killed.. --- What happens between 0 and 5 is enormously important..
